Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)

You must hold a valid driving licence (either full or provisional).  You can apply to the DVLA up to six weeks prior to your 16th birthday.  When applying, you are confirming that you can read a number plate at 20.5 metres and that you have read and understood the Highway Code.

All new riders must complete a CBT, allowing you to ride on the public highway with L plates, or to go on and take a full motorcycle test. DL196 (CBT) certificates are valid for two years. Some riders never actually want to take their full test and therefore return every two years to renew their CBT.

The course lasts all day (approximately 8:30 to 17:00 hrs) and there are five elements to complete. The rider must reach the required standard in each element before moving on to the next.

The CBT course content is set out by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) and the elements are as follows:-

Element A - Introduction A general introduction to the training session, including information on clothing and equipment when riding a motorcycle.

Element B - Practical on site training An introduction to the controls on the motorcycle including maintenance checks.

Element C - Practical on site riding Basic riding skills including starting and stopping the bike, clutch control, braking, gears and manoeuvres.

Element D - Practical on road training Pupils need a good understanding of the Highway code, as in this element there are discussions on the Highway Code, hazard perception and rider attitude.

Element E - Practical on road riding This section must include a two hour (minimum) road session where the pupil will encounter all traffic situations. The pupil will be evaluated on their machine control and general riding ability.

Upon completion of the CBT, and providing that the pupil reaches the required standard, a DL196 (CBT) certificate will be issued. The certificate is valid for two years and validates the provisional entitlement on their driving licence.

Hi-visability bibs, motorcycle jackets, gloves and safety helmets can be provided, free of charge.
